Gravel calculator
Plan a path or a decorative patch. Work out your gravel volume and compare buying options.
TRY THE NUMBERS
Example: gravel for a small rectangular path
- A 5 × 1 m path needs a 5 cm gravel layer, with no existing gravel included in this example.
- 5 × 1 × (5 ÷ 100) = 0.25 cubic metres. A 10% allowance gives 0.275 cubic metres.
- That is 11 bags of 25 litres, or 0.3 cubic metres when bulk is sold in 0.1 cubic metre steps. At an assumed density of 1,600 kg/m³, the unrounded order volume weighs about 440 kg.
The weight estimate uses volume including your allowance, before bulk-order rounding. Confirm density with the supplier; 0.3 cubic metres at this example density would weigh about 480 kg.

How to measure
THE MATH, MADE SIMPLE
How this gravel calculator works
We add the volume of every area, subtract the depth of material already there, then add your chosen allowance. Bags round up to whole bags. Bulk rounds up to the order increment you choose.
Rectangle: length × width × added depth.
Circle: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × added depth.
For imperial measurements, cubic feet ÷ 27 gives cubic yards. For metric measurements, centimetres ÷ 100 gives depth in metres; one cubic metre equals 1,000 litres.
Before you order
Use your supplier’s bag volume and minimum order increment. Prices use your selected currency without exchange conversion. Both options should use the same tax basis.
Bag costs exclude any bag delivery fee. Add that separately if needed. Choose comparable materials when comparing prices.
Read the bags vs bulk guide ↗Volume first. Weight is an estimate.
Stone density changes with material, size and moisture. The optional weight estimate uses your entered density, with 1,600 kg/m³ as an illustrative starting value. Ask your supplier for the appropriate density and order quantity. This tool does not design load-bearing bases or drainage systems.
